Brief content A robust and reliable mathematical model is required for design and optimization of pyrolysis reactor. Suitable model of screw pyrolysis reactor of sufficient complexity was not found in the literature. That is why a complex mathematical model of pyrolysis reactor coupled with particle model has been assembled. Wooden chips were selected as a feedstock. Yields of pyrolysis products predicted by the model were compared with experimental data. Experiments were carried out at a temperature of 650, 700 and 750 °C. Residence time of solid phase was set to 7, 9.6 and 15 min. Proposed model predicted the amount of produced char very accurately at all conditions. A good agreement between model and experimental data in tar and gas yield was achieved at higher temperatures. However, the model overshot gas formation at a temperature of 650 °C.
