Brief content A novel method for As determination in groundwater samples was developed using hydride generation high resolution continuum source quartz furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (HG-HR-CS-QFAAS) in batch mode after prereduction of As(V) to As(III) with L-cysteine and chemical derivatization with NaBH4 in diluted HCl. Optimal conditions for As prereduction and derivatization were 0.2 % L-cysteine, pH adjusted to 2.00±0.01 provided by 0.01 mol L-1 HCl, 0.6 % NaBH4 stabilized in 0.01 % NaOH as derivatization agent for 5 mL and 10 mL sample volume. A detection limit of 0.13±0.03 μg L-1 As was obtained. The proposed method was validated by certified reference materials analysis and applied on groundwater samples collected from the southwest of Romania. Method accuracy assessment resulted in recoveries between 97-114 % for 95 % confidence level.
