Brief content Biomass residues contain lignocellulose that is composed mainly of cellulose (about 50%), hemicellulose (about 30%) and lignin (about 20%). The content of the individual components may vary significantly for different types of biomass and even for the same type of biomass obtained from different regions. The processing of lignocellulosic biomass to hydrogen includes five major unit operations: pre-treatment, alkaline hydrolysis, saccharification, fermentation and product purification. Various processes contribute to facilitate the access of enzymes to polysaccharides to perform their hydrolysis and saccharification reactions. Parameters affecting the efficiency of saccharification were investigated. Box-Behnken design was applied for the saccharification opitimisation.
